El Nino threat lessens 20 Oct 2004
The prospect of an El Nino weather event this summer has receded, though the season will still be hotter and drier than average in most places. The National Climate Centre expects average rain in most parts of Australia. In south-east Queensland and eastern New South Wales, there is only a 35 per cent chance of average falls. There is a 60 per cent to 70 per cent chance of above average temperatures in the east and a 50 per cent chance in the west. The National Climate Centre the anomalies in Pacific currents usually associated with El Nino have failed to develop further, meaning that this summer may be a near miss El Nino this year.
