Wool growers in a tangle over PETA campaign 22 Oct 2004
The Australian Wool Growers Association has criticised rival industry bodies for refusing to negotiate with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals over the welfare of sheep, and thus risking export markets in Europe and North America. The peak industry body, WoolProducers says in response that it is naive to negotiate with "such an extremist group." US clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch said last week that it would boycott Australian wool products. The retailer took the decision in response to PETA's campaign over the practice of mulesing, or cutting away skin from the backsides of lambs or young sheep to prevent flystrike.
