Sydney butchers make the switch to cheap and nasty
25 Oct 2004

The NSW Food Authority are investigating more than 50 butcher shops in Sydney and the Hunter Valley over the alleged substitution of beef and lamb with cheaper meats. Food inspectors also found that 70 per cent of the meat samples taken contained sulphur dioxide, an illegal preservative. Scott Hansen, a spokesman for Meat & Livestock Australia, said substitution was a matter of grave concern. He said higher prices for beef and lamb were having an impact on margins at the retail level.
