Citrus growers seek consensus on canker counter
27 Oct 2004

The federal government said it would consider a proposal to destroy all fruit trees around Emerald in central Queensland, the site of two outbreaks of citrus canker.

John Pressler, who owns the orchard where the second outbreak was found, wants authorities to spend $16 million eradicating 320,000 trees. Citrus growers in South Australia have backed the Pressler plan, worried that Australia will miss out on new export markets if canker isn't eradicated in Queensland. Andrew Green from the SA Citrus Board says it would be a courageous move to destroy every citrus tree around Emerald, but one that's needed to protect the industry's image. South Australia is the first state to finish surveying orchards for canker, and declare it disease-free.
