Dry conditions crack grain estimates
4 Nov 2004

Profarmer analyst Dennis Wise says said he expected dry conditions would limit the national wheat crop of between 19.5 million tonnes and 20 million tonnes, less than the average of 20.6 million tonnes for the past five years. In the northern part of Western Australia's grain belt, where harvesting began in late October, yields have been disappointing. South Australia-based ABB this week said that a dry end to the season had forced it to downgrade its estimated production to 5.5 million tonnes from a prior estimate of 6.5million tonnes. East coast handler GrainCorp revised its forecast to 11.5 million tonnes from 13 million tonnes.
