Regional growth exceeds cities 9 Nov 2004
The annual 'State of the Regions' report commissioned by the Local Government Association from the National Institute of Economics and Industry Research shows that economic growth in the country is higher than in metropolitan areas. The report estimates a real rate of economic growth of 12.5 per cent in inland regional Australia, compared to nine per cent in metropolitan and coastal regions, over the past five years. The report’s author Craig Shepherd said this was largely due to a recovery from the drought, though the larger provincial cities were reporting steady population and industry growth.
