Alternatives to mulesing being sought
10 Nov 2004

Research into the genome of the blowfly will have to provide the alternative to the practice of “mulesing”, which protects sheep from fly strike. Australian Wool Innovation will fund research to help phase out mulesing of young sheep. Fly strike costs farmers more than $160 million a year in control measures and lost production. But the practice of mulesing has attracted opposition from animal rights groups and led one US retailer to destock Australian wool garments.
