Pork producers challenge pig meat import rules 10 Nov 2004
Australian Pork Limited has challenged the Federal Government's quarantine policy in the federal court, which may allow further imports of pig meat. Australian Pork Ltd wants the government to invoke a precautionary clause that could stop imports if there was insufficient evidence to show there is no risk of disease being brought into Australia. Biosecurity Australia, the relevant government agency said farmers should be confident that the agency would provide proper measures to protect the pork industry.
