Growers decide fate of Goulburn Valley canneries
15 Nov 2004

Fruit growers and cannery workers in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley may decide whether or not Coca Cola Amatil gets to take over SPC Ardmona. In December 1990, SPC came close to bankruptcy. To save the company, cannery workers took a pay cut and the growers who owned the co-operative took a price cut. Five years later, SPC merged with the smaller Ardmona co-operative's cannery. Now these growers and a few workers own about 26 per cent of SPC Ardmona, and will vote on whether to agree to the $500 million takeover bid from Coke.
