Business booms in the bush, but labour hard to find 16 Nov 2004
Businesses in regional areas are performing well, are more confident about their outlook than their city rivals and are also more strongly focused on exports, an annual study of competitiveness by regional business Australian Industry Group and Commonwealth Bank has found. But businesses in the bush are having difficulty finding good employees. The study found that labour costs in regional areas equal 24 per cent of sales, compared with 18 per cent for metropolitan firms. About 35 per cent of businesses in the regions export goods or services, compared with 38 per cent in the city.
