Dairy deregulation concentrates industry in Victoria
17 Nov 2004

The deregulation of the dairy industry and the payment of compensation to farmers has caused a realignment of the industry. Most of the dairy farms are now concentrated in south-east Australia, in Victoria. Dairy Australia’s annual industry update, In Focus, estimated the numbers of dairy farms at 9,500, down from 22,000 25 years ago. Over the same 25 years, the Australian dairy herd climbed from 1.88 million head to 2.03 million. Average annual milk production per cow has jumped from 2848 litres to 4900 litres. And the average herd size has risen from 85 head in the 1980s to 210 head today.
