Sheep meat of more value than wool 1 Dec 2004
Lamb and mutton earn more to for sheep farmers than wool, a survey by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics found. In its 2004 Australian Wool Industry report, ABARE said good prices for lamb and mutton had helped buttress wool farm incomes and had prompted a shift from merinos to sheep more suited to meat production. ABARE said total returns from sheep and wool production remained favourable, and that this would encourage producers to rebuild sheep flocks. ABARE estimated that specialist wool producers had farm cash incomes of about $49,000 in 2003/04, up $14,000 on 2003.
