Plenty of jobs in the bush, but few want them
3 Dec 2004

Australian agribusiness is facing a debilitating skills shortage. A survey of more than 300 agribusiness companies by The Lucas Group found most were bullish about the outlook for demand for their products and services, and that 41 per cent wanted to hire more staff next year. Two thirds said they feared there was a lack of skilled candidates available to fill the potential vacancies. The Lucas Group said agricultural employers were unhappy with the number and suitability of candidates, and were finding it increasingly hard to attract quality candidates to rural areas. Barriers to filling positions in regional Australia included a lack of adequate infrastructure, relative isolation and a negative perception of the agricultural industry in general. The Age, 03/12/04
