Murray River drought the most severe on record
6 Dec 2004

The River Murray is suffering more from the current drought than under any dry spell since record keeping began in 1890. Research conducted by the Murray-Darling Basin Commission shows the four years to October 2004 have recorded the lowest River Murray system inflows and thus the driest four years on record. The River Murray supports two million people, including the people of Adelaide, who draw 90 per cent of their water from the river during dry years. In the past four years, most of the Murray-Darling system floodplain had not been wet by flood, while in the last eight years, the floodplain in many parts of the river system has only flooded once, in 2000.
