Forestry plantations spread seeds of land boom
15 Dec 2004

The price per hectare for land suitable for forestry plantations has increased to more than $5,500, up from $3,000 five year ago, as investors and governments pursue widescale reforestation. Apart from commercial forestry groups, investment schemes are driving up the price of land. Agricultural investment schemes attracted double the level of inflows in 2004 than in 2003, as schemes and investors rebound from adverse tax rulings. Schemes raised $665 million over the last year, up 93 per cent from 2003, according to Australian Agribusiness Group. Similar schemes raised about $1 billion in 2000.
