No clear counter to citrus canker
20 Dec 2004

The Queensland government will reconsider pleas by citrus growers to remove all canker hosts from the Emerald area. The government said it would not act until surveillance activity in the Central Burnett was completed in January. Canker is currently believed to be confined to the Emerald Pest Quarantine Area. Queensland Citrus Growers say the five citrus farms at Emerald have all agreed that their future is dependent on eradicating canker by removing all the trees. The cost to remove the trees would be about $20 a tree, for a total cost of $4 million to $6 million to remove all the trees in Emerald. The Emerald growers hope to spread this cost across all orange orchadists.
