Tags come at a cost for livestock ID system 22 Dec 2004
Primary producers in Queensland will have to spend $26 million a year on equipment such as electronic tags and readers in order to comply with the National Livestock Identification System. The system is being implemented nationwide. The system, which is already in use in New South Wales, requires calves to be identified with an electronic identification device prior to leaving their property of birth. All cattle born after July 2004 must be identified with an NLIS device, either an ear tag or rumen bolus before they leave their property of birth. There are two exemptions, for "bobby calves", which are calves under 6 weeks of age and separated from their dam, and also for calves of any age sold at foot with their dam.
