Big wet helps northern
10 Jan 2005

Northern New South Wales is experiencing its biggest summer planting season in five years, thanks to rains in late November and early December. Estimates from the state’s Department of Primary Industries show that 20 per cent of the state is now “satisfactorily” free of drought, but that 61 per cent of the state is considered drought affected. This ratio is down from 69 per cent a month ago. Twenty per cent of farmland is considered marginal, down from 25 per cent last month. Most of the state’s west and south-west remain afflicted by the drought. However, the flood peak in the Darling River has now reached Wilcannia.
