Fishermen trawl for federal help
11 Jan 2005

Trawler fishermen operating the south-east fishery are lobbying the federal government to buy back half their licences, to reduce the number of trawlers from 110 to about 50 or 60. Returns in the fishery fell to about $3 million from about $8 million between 1997 and 2002, from turnover of about $66 million worth of fish. Real catch prices per boat have not changed for some years.
