Union checks Sunraysia fruit and vegetable farmers
25 Jan 2005

Union officials are visiting northern Victoria farms over the next fortnight to check claims fruit and vegetable pickers are being exploited. The Australian Workers Union said it received reports of poor treatment of some workers including pay rates equivalent to less than $4 an hour, unsafe equipment, lack of fresh water and toilet facilities, and sub-standard accommodation. There were reports last month that the Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board was planning to import 10,000 workers, supposedly guest workers from China, to the area.
