Skills shortage a headache for remote employers 31 Jan 2005
A shortage of skilled and unskilled labour in the resources industry and in remote regions is making operations difficult for many employers. Employers say there is work in most mining regions and plenty of work in Perth, but that staff are often unwilling to move. As a result, resource employers are using fly-in, fly-out rosters; and contracting with staff either in the south-east of the country, or even overseas. Companies are also importing labour from overseas on short-term visas, especially in Western Australia's north-west. The federal government has also added semi-skilled trades now on the preferred migrant list.
