White House plans cuts to farm subsidies
7 Feb 2005

The US government said it would limit subsidies paid to individual farmers. The White House plans to cut annual federal payments by US$587 million a year. The cuts to subsidies are subject to the agreement of Congress, but are part of wider plan to reduce the US budget deficit, which has blown out due to the cost of the war in Iraq. Australian trade minister Mark Vaile said the cuts to US farm subsidies was a breakthrough for Australian farmers, but warned it would face strong resistance from the US farm lobby.
