Pratt pushes property rights over conserved water 30 Mar 2005
Businessman Richard Pratt called for a more business like approach to attracting private investment to water saving projects, including a clear and unequivocal property right to the water saved. In the speech to the Australian Water Summit in Sydney, said more than 70 per cent of the 2.5 million hectares under irrigation across Australia still uses flood or furrow methods, and that if converted to drip, spray or other methods could cut water use by between 20 per cent and 90 per cent. A feasibility study in the Murrumbidgee Valley in southwest NSW by Pratt Water in conjunction with the NSW and federal governments, found 1300 gigalitres were lost or unaccounted for, equal to about 30 per cent of the water in the system.
