Fonterra plans price premium for organic milk
31 Mar 2005

Dairy processor Fonterra plans to increase the number of its organic milk suppliers, in a bid to satisfy overseas markets. The company said it hopes to recruit about 40 organic dairies a year for the next four years by offering a seven per cent premium on milk solids payouts for the three years it takes to get certified, and then pay a 20 per cent premium once certified. Fonterra is expected to approach most of the organic dairy farmers in New Zealand, but may also seek suppliers in Australia in light of its planned takeover of National Foods.
