Abattoirs bleed due to lack of labour
4 Apr 2005

Too few people are willing to slaughter animals, leaving meat processors suffering a shortage of labour. The shortage is most acute in Queensland, which has a $4 billion meat industry and needs at least 1200 more workers. Processor and exporter V & V Walsh employs 400 people in its Bunbury abattoir south of Perth, has been forced to halt expansion plans due to lack of workers. The company said it was knocking back orders due to the lack of labour. The company has hired a handful of workers from The Philippines, and recently sponsored the immigration of men from Ghana under the business migration scheme. However, the migration schemes cater only for skilled workers, and the industry is also suffering a dire shortage of unskilled workers.
