Graziers in a huff over buffel grass 4 Apr 2005
Northern cattlemen are cranky that the Cooperative Research Centre for Australian Weed Management labelled buffel grass a 'fire-weed'. Buffel grass is a favourite pasture across the Queensland and NSW's Brigalow Belt. Graziers in Queensland's central highlands contradicted the claims of the scientists from the CRC and Charles Darwin University. The Charles Darwin University study found vast areas of woodland in the north and centre of Australia were at risk from the build up of African grasses, causing fires of an intensity and timing that native trees, shrubs and grasses could not withstand. Meat and Livestock Australia says buffel grass had been recognised by government as a proven drought-proofing plant which had been critical for many graziers in surviving the big dry.
