US imports blamed for decline in pigmeat prices 8 Apr 2005
Imports of pork from the US increased to 1.1 million kilograms, more than double the volume of imports in January. The imports may be forcing prices down. Sydney-based wholesaler B.E. Campbell said wholesale prices for pork, bacon and legs had all come back by about 50c/kg to 60c/kg in the past month, as US volumes increased. The national average porker price in mid-March was 9 per cent higher than a year earlier, and the average baconer price was 17 per cent above last year’s price. Australian Pork Ltd analysts said the decline in domestic prices over the last two months followed three months of relative market stability.
