Grazing cereals displace canola in winter plantings
8 Apr 2005

Grain growers in New South Wales are turning their backs on canola this season in favour of pulses. The latest Grains Report from the NSW Department of Primary Industries forecasts a winter crop planting of 4.8 million hectares, down about three per cent on 2004. The department expects a 25 per cent decline in canola plantings, and a 60 per cent rise in pulse plantings. The area given to canola is only about half that recorded in the 1990s. The DPI also reports an increase in interest in winter wheats and other grazing cereals as farmers seek to cash in on the bouyant prime lamb and beef sector. However, most of the grain belt is very dry, and yields are likely to be low.
