Drought intensifies in southern Australia
11 Apr 2005

The weather bureau has warned that rainfall deficiencies in north-western and central Australia were expanding and now extend across the continent in a band from Port Hedland and Broome in WA, to Bourke in north-western NSW following a poor wet season and high temperatures. In southern and eastern Australia, large areas have failed to receive adequate rainfall to recover from the 2002/03 El Nino event. The National Farmers Federation believes drought-affected regions are not as widespread as they were 12 months ago, but the drought is intensifying in the worst-hit areas, with conditions worsening in southern NSW, Victoria and South Australia.
