Mackay Sugar may mothball Pleystowe Mill
11 Apr 2005

Mackay Sugar has yet to decide whether to operate all four of its sugar mills this season. Dry weather means that the co-operative may mothball its Pleystowe Mill this season given the prospect of a poor sugar crop. February and March were the driest on record. Canegrowers estimated that this year’s sugar crop would be not be more than five million tonnes, compared with more than eight million tonnes crushed in the late-1990s, with less land under cane at the time.
