El Nino pattern likely to develop by mid 2005 13 Apr 2005
The University of Southern Queensland said the chance of an El Nino pattern developing in the Pacific Ocean in the middle of this year was now about 50 per cent, compared with 20 per cent in most years. The El Nino pattern, which relates to water temperature, is closely correlated with extended periods of drought in Australia. Many farming areas across Australia have not recovered from the 2002/03 El Nino event. The National Farmers' Federation president Peter Corish said other experts supported the USQ prediction.
