Iraq’s wheat whinge may be price ploy
19 Apr 2005

Wheat exporter AWB said it was confident it would maintain sales to Iraq despite threats by Iraq’s importers that they would not award any new wheat contracts. The Iraqi Grain Board have said Australian wheat might have been contaminated with iron dust. Iraq has previously complained about the price of the wheat, which the AWB said reflected quality and political risks. Now Iraq is complaining about quality, in what might be a negotiating ploy. The AWB said a new round of tests verified four shiploads of hard white wheat exported to Iraq were free of all contaminants including iron dust.
