Processors and dairy farmers clash over milk price cartel
20 Apr 2005

Milk processors and supermarkets are seeking to block a bid by dairy farmers in Western Australia to form a cartel to negotiate prices with processors. Peters & Brownes, WA's biggest dairy processor, said the proposal would stultify competition and efficiency and harm farmers. National Foods, owner of the Pura and Masters milk brands, said the proposal could be highly anti-competitive. Coles Myer also said it opposed the plan. Dairy WA, which represents a majority of the 300 dairy farmers in WA, says prices paid to farmers, at around 25 cents a litre, are below the cost of production for many farmers.
