Three more branch railway lines closed in NSW grain belt
21 Apr 2005

The New South Wales government said it would "suspend", meaning close, three more railway branch lines that carry grain in western NSW. The lines closed are the Gwabegar-Binnaway, Rankin Springs-Barmedman, Burcher-West Wyalong and Willbriggie-Yanco lines. A fourth branch line, from Gwabegar to Binnaway, will stay open only long enough to remove the grain already stored in silos along it before it is closed. Of the remaining eight branch lines, they have been maintained on a fix-when-fail basis for decades and are in such a poor state that only light locomotives can use them at low speed.
