ABARE models cost of foot and mouth outbreak 29 Apr 2005
A severe outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Australia would probably lead to the death of six million cattle, sheep and pigs and lead to the loss of $3 billion in production, a study into the costs and management of the threat by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics found. ABARE said an outbreak would cost more than $600 million in compensation payments to farmers. It also found the best way to minimise the impact of an outbreak would be to use a combination of slaughter and vaccination. ABARE examined the costs associated with an outbreak, and tested the best way to control such an outbreak. It found that an effort to kill infected herds in a severe outbreak would result in the death of 5.7 million animals.
