Beef herd likely to decline
12 May 2005

The Australian Beef Association said it expects the national cattle herd to fall, a prediction contrary to forecasts of growth by Meat and Livestock Australia. Three years ago, MLA had predicted that the national herd would expand to 32 million by 2006 but in fact the herd fell. More recently, MLA predicted the national herd would rise to 30.4 million by 2009 and that production will rise by 13.6 percent. The Australian Beef Association said the herd would fall because of the drought; inadequate production of grain for feed due to the drought; the cost of compliance with the national livestock identification system; reduced access to land owned by indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, and the spread of eucalypt plantations.
