Maintenance funds agreed for Eyre Peninsula rail
16 May 2005

The Australian Railroad Group, ABB Grain Limited and local government agreed with the state government to invest $20 million in maintenance on the ageing rail network on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. The South Australian Farmers Federation said Eyre Peninsula grain growers contributed $2 million. The rail network, which is not linked to the rest of the state system, goes west to Thevenard and Penong and north and east to Kimba and Buckleboo. It carries about one million tonnes of grain a year for export through Port Lincoln. The first leg from Port Lincoln to Cummins was built in 1907 and it reached its current length of 800km in 1926.
