Winter outlook grim for south-eastern grain farmers
23 May 2005

The Bureau of Meteorology says there is now a 60 to 65 per cent chance of below average winter rains across southern Australia this year. The bureau said the chance of above median rainfall during winter was only between 35 and 40 per cent over much of southern Victoria, south-eastern South Australia and northern Tasmania. ProFarmer managing editor Dennis Wise said market prices now reflected the seasonal outlook, with grain prices up by more than $20 a tonne across the board, with prices rising in response to expectations of poor yields.
