Cabinet may relax rules on drought assistance 23 May 2005
The federal government is considering broader criteria for welfare payments and further interest rate subsidies for farmers. Farmers have criticised the existing "exceptional circumstances" scheme as too restrictive and inflexible. Under current rules, farming families with no debt and a low income miss out on subsidies for their business. Those with off-farm income or have assets elsewhere are also ineligible for welfare payments.
