Alpine grazing ban imposed 25 May 2005
Victoria's government said it would not renew any licences for cattle grazing in the Alpine National Park. The decision brings Victoria’s conservation practices of the high country into line with New South Wales, which banned such grazing 30 years ago. The ban will hit about 45 operators, who muster 8000 cattle in the Alpine National Park each summer. The government will pay each cattleman $100 for each head of cattle per year over three years, up to a cap of $100,000.
