Grazing ban driven by science and politics 25 May 2005
The scientific evidence on the damaging ways of cows on alpine pastures has been well documented for more than 50 years. In 1957, the Australian Academy of Science recommended that as soon as possible grazing animals be excluded from high country heights above 4500 feet. In 1998, a report for Parks Victoria said the persistence of grazing was "an indictment" on land management authorities and Parks Victoria. One driver of the timing of the alpine grazing ban is that most of the cattlemen's seven-year licences expire in August. Another is the politics of improving water quality in the catchments.
