AWB optimistic on winter wheat crop despite the dry 26 May 2005
Agribusiness group AWB brushed aside chatter about the drought on the east coast, and said it expected an average wheat harvest and a full-year profit similar to last year's. AWB has forecast a 2005-06 wheat crop of 21 million to 23 million tonnes based on normal seasonal conditions. However, this will depend on rain on the east coast. AWB said the east coast would have a late season this year, and that farmers could plant wheat until the end of June. AWB said in 1953 farmers did not plant until the third week of July and some had their best crop ever.
