Alpine grazing ban supported by Canberra 26 May 2005
Victoria's mountain cattlemen may find little support in Canberra for a proposed heritage listing. The Victorian government has said it will not renew grazing licences for cattle in national park. Environment Minister Ian Campbell is considering an emergency addition of the Alpine National Park and cattle grazing on the National Heritage List. Cattlemen believe this will protect their annual musters of stock to the high country. But it has been revealed that the Commonwealth's heritage branch had expressed major concerns about cattle grazing in the park, saying the practice was "highly inconsistent" with the protection of the park's natural heritage values.
