Barley may be a better bet than wheat this winter 27 May 2005
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics said the drought was expected to result in lower wheat output this year, but warned the forecast was preliminary. ABARE said it was still refining its assessment of the effects the big dry could have on the winter grain crop. ABARE said farmers may opt to grow barley rather than wheat this season because of the greater flexibility with planting times.
ABARE said it was almost too late to plant canola, particularly in NSW.
