McDonalds chips Tasmanian potato contracts 27 May 2005
Fast food giant McDonald's will buy only half its potatoes from growers in Tasmania rather than buy all of its potatoes from Simplot’s growers in the state. Simplot has been the sole supplier of chips to McDonald's since the burger chain set up in Australia. Tasmanian farms and factories supply all potato products for Simplot, meaning the state effectively supplies chips to McDonald's 730 Australian outlets. McDonald's will buy half its potato supply needs from McCain Foods. The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association said the decision would cut the value of Tasmanian potato grower’s contracts by 43,000 tonnes, or 15 per cent.
