One farmer in eight qualifies for drought aid 30 May 2005
The federal government is likely to relax the assets and income test on off-farm activities, providing access to drought relief for hundreds of farmers that do not qualify now. The extra assistance may be worth $200 million a year. Department of Agriculture officials last week said 13 per cent of farmers in drought-declared regions had received drought assistance, well below earlier estimates that one third of farmers in affected regions would qualify for assistance.
