Western wheat belt offsets dry winter in eastern Australia

The Grains Council said the dry winter in eastern and southern Australia could cut the size of the region's winter crop by 85 per cent unless decent rains fall in the next two weeks. However, the promising start to the West Australian cropping season, good water availability in cotton-growing areas and strong dairy and sugar prices mean that lost agricultural production should be a milder drag on economic growth than the 2002 drought.
