Cane growers resist long term contracts with Bundaberg Sugar
9 Jun 2005

A dispute between farmers and mill operator Bundaberg Sugar may delay the sugar crush. Bundaberg Sugar wants growers around Innisfail, south of Cairns, to sign supply contracts for three years. However, farmers are hesitant to commit because of an expected increase in demand for sugar from the burgeoning ethanol industry. More than 2.5 million tonnes of cane is crushed each year in the three mills located in the area around Innisfail. The contract dispute is thought to affect about 1 million tonnes.
