Forced sales take the top off cattle prices 9 Jun 2005
Livestock sales by drought-affected farmers have taken the top off cattle prices over the last month, offsetting the price support from supplying the demand from Japan. Unlike previous droughts, cattle prices have remained strong. But in recent weeks, beef producers have substantially increased the number of cattle on the market. The benchmark eastern young cattle indicator has fallen to $3.18 per kilogram live weight this week, compared with about $3.40 a month ago.
