Incomes rising for beef producers 10 Jun 2005
The financial performance of Australia's beef farms has strengthened in the last year, thanks to strong demand from Japan and Korea, where Australian producers filled the void after the two east Asian countries blocked American beef following a scare over mad cow disease. The drought is also helping in the short term. The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics said farmers were selling cattle due to the dry, and leading to a rise in income. ABARE said this means, however, that there would be no increase in the national herd in 2005. ABARE said the average cash income for specialist beef producers was about $72,600 in 2003/04, and would improve substantially in the current year.
